There are two main components to Search Engine Marketing. One is Optimizing your website or blog so that you will increase your traffic by being found at the very top of the main search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. The other is advertising your website or blog strategically as to get the best benefit from your money spent which we will cover here (Search Engine Promotion).

In our last look at Search Engine Marketing and Optimization we had reviewed and reserved a unique domain name, www.promhairstylestoday.com . We decided that we wanted to focus on the keyword “prom hairstyles” as by reviewing that term we could see that it was the least difficult and most beneficial from a search engine traffic standpoint. Now that the research on domain names and keyword difficulty is complete we can move on to our design phase which again is part of Search Engine Marketing.

There are many different ways to increase web site and blog traffic through the proper design. With hundreds of webdesign tools on the internet to help you including Free website templates things have been made easier. Although most of the major search engines all have free website building, marketing tools, templates, and designs, we prefer to use other services such as this one (Design Templates for Websites and Blogs) as it can greatly benefit you by paying a few bucks to get a good design. Think about it…What if everyone had the same free designs that the search engines offered? What would make your site any different than the next person’s site? At least if you pay a small price for a design it will greatly decrease the chances of someone else having a site just like yours as there are more pay templates and designs to choose from and less people willing to pay for something. Howevever, if you have the knowledge and can write html, css, and work with flash and graphics programs, it is always best to build your site yourself. It is our opinion that if you build it, your site may reap more search engine marketing benefits…

To continue, lets talk about design layout. Whether you bought a layout, used a free one, or designed one yourself there are important Search Engine Marketing aspects to consider:

Your site or blog must be code friendly – make sure all of the code is compliant per W3C which is the world wide web consortium. They have built standards for codes such as (HTM, HTML, XHTML, SMIL, MathML) and other codes so as to maintain some order on the internet. With several different types of browsers like Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Chrome, and Opera it is important to keep standards so that a web page or blog maintains is structural appearance over all browsers including old and new versions of each browser. You can go to (http://validator.w3.org) to check the validation (or standard) of your page. Once you get your page to validate, you will get a symbol to copy and paste in your web site showing that your page has been validated. It is important to note that you should check for yourself to see how each page looks over different browsers as just because the code is validated does not always mean that everything appears exactly the same. If some things don’t look right, try making some minor adjustments with code or images and check it again until you are satisfied. If you are having a really hard time and cannot seem to figure out something with the W3C validation or the browsers shots, we recommend you join this forum (http://www.webmasterworld.com/php/) . We recommend you follow this entire process at the very beginning of web design, in the middle of design, and at the very end of designing and putting all of the content in on each web page. This is important to do until this becomes second nature to you.

Your site or blog code should be source formatted – For Search Engine Optimization and Marketing reasons you want everything to run as smooth as silk when it comes to your website code. Dreamweaver has some cool features that can really help with cleaning up source code such as the (apply sourse formatting) option and the (clean up HTML) option. If your going to use dreamweaver, make sure to go back and remove all of the (<!--DWLayoutDefaultTable-->) type of codes that Dreamweaver tends to throw in your code while working in the layout format. Each character or even empty space you can remove is removing one (bit) of unnecessary code and in the end, this can all add up to some serious wasted space and we don’t want any of that when the search engine robots come and visit us. If you not using Dreamweaver or another (FTP) File Transfer Protocol type program, you can download tools to help you accomplish the same goal such as this one. (Source Formating Tool).

Use CSS to eliminate unnecessary code - When using Dreamweaver or other FTP programs, it is easy to get caught up using the interface of the program and just switching a color, font, or aspect of something by clicking on item in the properties tab. This can be a really bad habit as without your knowledge, code such as <style> code is being added in your page and with that you really need (CSS) – Cascading Style Sheets. The purpose of CSS is to eliminate the need for the code to tell the browsers to do something every time a person clicks on an additional page in the site. Instead of putting the same code on a bunch of pages, you can put the code on just one .css page and just place a link from the top <head> section of the page to the css page itself. Here is a sample code:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="/css/page1.css" type="text/css" />. This process helps your search engine marketing by way of search engine optimization. CSS can also be used for many design aspects of a site such as page layouts, image layouts, and cell structures, but we will not go into that here as you would have to take an entire course on CSS listed here (http://www.w3schools.com/Css/default.asp) to learn those things.
