Before you begin building a website, you will have to do plenty of research on your subject to make sure that you will be competitive, have a niche, and can even attempt to compete in the search engine world. Although you may have various other ways of getting internet visits, the best targeted audience is always search engines and major directory websites that get a ton of traffic. We can tell you with full confidence that the best traffic concerning quantity and targeting will come from the Google search engine. Yes you can get a ton of traffic from Yahoo and some from MSN but since nobody currently compares to Google, so it will best serve you to start here:

1. When doing your research, remember measure twice and cut once. In other words, it is best to be very thorough here than find out half way through you have some major problems. As an example, lets pick a topic to consider. How about, “Hair Salons”. You want to build a site all about “hair salons” and you want to see if you can make money at it. But first it is important to decide all of the ways you are going to make money. Lets list the possibilities:

A. You can make money selling other companies products for hair care online
B. You can make money selling advertising if you have a good Google PR ranking (discussed later) selling links.
C. You can make money selling advertising if you have good traffic to your site
D. You can make money on Google Adsense by placing Google Ad Code on your site.
E. You can make money selling listings if your doing a directory of hair salons since they will be getting targeted traffic from your site.
F. You can make money capturing emails and setting up a newsletter or monthly email campaign about new items.
G. You can make money from marketing products sold on clickbank, linkshare, and comission junction.
H. You can sell ebooks about hair styles and salon tips
I. You can manufacturer and sell your own products for hair care and related goods.

Of all these choices, you must decide which ones you are going to do and design your website accordingly. Many of the new large sites in the world have come with unique software tools, and other things to offer so if you can add something like that, you’ll be that much more powerful.

For our purposes here, we will decide that we are going to do all of the above. Therefore we will need to find the right domain name to use as our SEO (search engine optimization) domain name. We will also want to find our Marketing domain name. Often it is best to actually have 2-4 domain names and consider building 2 websites. Many of the great high ranking sites have sister sites and sometimes it is much easier to build two at the same time rather than another one after the first one. (building 2 sites is an older but still semi viable way of working on SEO for link trading). For now we will start with the first site…

Lets say we want our Marketing name of the company to be, “Hair Today Gone Tomorrow”. Soon we will need to go look at a registrar for domain names to reserve and check for availability. Then we must research our search engine optimization domain name. But before that, we must type in, “Google.com” search engine to see what comes up when enter hair salons.

As you type in “Hair” you’ll see “HairStyles” and “HairCuts” come up even before you get your full word in. Write down those words on a piece of paper and any major words that come up in the search engines as you’ll be checking traffic and keyword difficulty soon. For now finish with, “Hair Salons”. You’ll see a site, http://www.findabeautysalon.com come up first. At the time we wrote this the site is a PR 3 which is decent on the lower side. Then take a look at the complexity of their site, it looks pretty nice, has a lot of links and information from the start. There are tools you can use to check out this websites traffic as long as it is more than a year old. Go to (Site Analyitics) and type in the domain name. You’ll get some basic stats. 25K per month unique visitors is about 1000 per day. This information isn’t accurate 100% in fact they may get 2000 visitors per day but it is unlikely they are at less than 900. We can tell you that this a decent amount of traffic and could estimate that just off google ads alone they may be making $1,500-$3000 per month.

So far it looks advantageous to continue. But check some more terms and compare below using (Google Keywords Checker) against (Keyword Difficulty Tool) :

Already without much looking we can see that the difficulty vs the traffic is best with “Prom Hairstyles”. And after our research this is starting to look really good. You see building a website using search engine optimization is all about making money and even though “Prom Hairstyles” wasn’t our first choice, it is the one we are going to go with now because it looks like it may be easier to get into the top 5 spots.

We are going to begin researching possible names at www.gkg.net starting with promhairstyles.com. You see you want the words, “prom” and “hairstyles” in your SEO domain name. You can also try using dashes. Anyway, after our review, it looked like the best name available at the time was www.promhairstylestoday.com it has the word “prom” and “hairstyles” and the word “today” can be a bonus as it is not too long or without meaning. This will be our final SEO name.

Now if you are going to use a different marketing name, such as “Hair Today Gone Tomorrow” you’ll need a different domain so you can set it up as a 301 redirect. That way when someone types in your marketing name, it can go to your SEO name (which will always be primary). However, for our purposes and expense, we’ll just use our SEO name as one since the marketing name, “Prom Hairstyles Today” isn’t too bad.

Congratulations! You have now overcome the major hurdles of Search Engine Optimization and Design. You have the idea, you’ve done some research. Although you have chosen a more directed name using the word “prom” it really doesn’t matter. As we said before you could easily have used a completely different marketing name so don't get hung up on this difference as it will be a benefit in fact maybe a huge one.

This beginning phase is a really important step in search engine and website optimization. If you begin without doing this research or buying a good SEO domain name, you will greatly increase your odds of failure at least until you understand all there is to know about SEO.
